Migraine: Herbal tea for migraines and headaches

Many have preceded me in describing migraines and various types of headaches. I will therefore limit myself to giving some recipes for herbal tea against migraines and headaches in general.

Medicines of the people

One of the first healing methods was herbal medicine. Simple remedies, discovered by the people, validated by science and supported by experience, undoubtedly still have great value. The active ingredients of medicinal plants (including acids, minerals, salts and essential oils) are important factors in metabolism, digestion and strengthening of bones and blood vessels. There are different views on how migraines and headaches arise. What is certain is that certain nutrients and thus digestion have an important influence. People like Bircher-Benner, Bilz, Kneip, Brother Aloysius were convinced of this and based their remedies on this. Below are a number of recipes for migraines and headaches that have been effective for more than 150 years. The herbs can be used fresh or dried. Dried herbs are available in most health food stores.
The general preparation method for herbal tea is as follows: Pour a tablespoon of mixture with a cup of boiling hot water. This mixture is allowed to steep for 6 to 10 minutes. Then strain the tea and drink it hot or cold, depending on what is described in the recipe.
The tea may possibly be sweetened with honey.

Recipe 1

  • 20 grams of Verbena root
  • 20 grams of Primrose
  • 15 grams of sorrel
  • 15 grams of elderberry
  • 5 grams of Gentian

This tea is not suitable during pregnancy.

Recipe 2 (Specially for migraine)

  • 20 grams of Chamomile
  • 20 grams of Rue or 10 grams of Valerian root

General preparation. Drink 1/2 cup in small sips 2 to 3 times a day.
This tea contains many bitter substances and can cause mild nausea. Therefore, it should be drunk in small sips. Eating this way with honey is recommended.

Recipe 3

  • 25 grams of Verbena root
  • 20 grams of sorrel
  • 20 grams of Valerian root

General preparation. Drink 1/2 cup 2 to 3 times a day.
It may be that not every recipe suits and works for every individual. It is recommended to use the tea for several days. The recipes contain herbs for approximately 2 to 3 weeks. If the chosen recipe does not have the desired result, feel free to try one of the other recipes.
