Eating disorders treatment

People with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia often have changing moods due to what they eat and weigh on the scale. It becomes an obsession with being able to lose weight again and again in every possible way. Eating disorders should be treated as soon as possible because the longer you wait, the more difficult the treatment will become.

Anorexia

Anorexia nervosa roughly translates to ‘lack of appetite due to nervous causes’. It is a disease characterized by abnormal eating behavior, severe weight loss and psychological instability. People with anorexia have an extreme fear of gaining weight, which causes them to try to keep their weight much less than normal. They will always think they are too fat and will do everything they can to achieve this imaginary perfectionism. Anorexia is also primarily an emotional disorder that largely occurs in young women during puberty. It is important to correct this obsessive behavior because anorexia is a life-threatening condition that can even lead to death if not corrected. It can lead to physical illnesses such as heart failure, starvation, dehydration or suicide due to excessive emotionality.

Symptoms

  • Low bloodpressure
  • Thinning hair, dry skin and brittle nails
  • Low resistance, pale in the face
  • Obsessive about calories and fat levels
  • Dramatic weight loss
  • Frequent (intentional) vomiting after eating

Therapy

Anorexia nervosa is better treated the earlier it is detected. Hospitalization requires half the time, as thinness can become so dangerous that it can even become life-threatening. When the BMI is lower than 14, it is called malnutrition and it becomes very serious. The condition will have to be combated by a nutritionist who will try to regain normal weight, and a psychiatrist or psychologist who will provide support to fight against the depression and anxiety that caused the anorexia.

Bulimia

Bulimia nervosa means ‘appetite like an ox due to nervous causes’. It is an eating disorder characterized by periods of massive binge eating in which they try to consume as much food as possible and then make frantic attempts to prevent weight gain. If you have the condition bulimia, you will always be in a conflict to lose as much weight as possible while you cannot resist the binge eating. Bulimia can lead to physical and physical damage such as heart problems, intestinal problems due to excessive overeating, mental health problems such as depression and anxiety, stomach problems, etc.

Symptoms

  • Obsessed with the body and weight gain
  • Obsessed with food, eating a lot at once
  • Depression, stress, self-loathing
  • Constant vomiting, especially after eating

Therapy

As with anorexia, a supportive and reliable therapeutic relationship must be built to find out where this obsessive behavior comes from before returning to eating habits. Only when the physical and physical conditions begin to deteriorate will immediate medical intervention be necessary.
