However, every person grows older and already after the age of twenty the teenager-like appearance is replaced by an adult appearance. Five years later, after the age of twenty-five, the first wrinkles are often already visible. After the age of thirty, the skin has aged to such an extent that its youthful youth is completely lost. From the age of forty, the skin is aged. Most people have a facelift between the ages of forty-five and sixty-five.

A facelift, how does that work?

The skin of the face should be in good condition. Smoking and drinking alcohol are not recommended. You may be asked to stop smoking before treatment. A distinction is made between a small facelift, also called a mini facelift, and a major facelift, also called a total facelift. A total facelift involves tightening muscles of the (entire) face, removing and tightening skin, correcting the jawline and neck, among other things. The doctor makes incisions in the area around the ears, in the area where scalp hair grows, to the back of the neck, and under the chin. With a mini facelift, the surgeon mainly tightens muscles in the face.
After cutting, the muscles are released from the skin. If the skin is separated from the muscles and other tissue, the surgeon can move and tighten underlying tissue. Accumulated fat can also be removed. After tightening the face, the surgeon closes the skin again using stitches. A facelift is especially suitable for reducing deep lines around the nose, mouth, forehead, and tightening the neck.

After the operation

After the treatment, the patient suffers quite a bit from the facelift. The skin feels tight and there are bruising and swelling. Over time, the skin may become itchy and there may be numbness. The numbness in (parts of) the skin usually disappears after a few weeks, the itching is also temporary and is related to the healing of the wounds. The rejuvenating effect of a facelift can be very significant.

What are the risks of a facelift?

The risks that may occur are (after)bleeding, hypersensitivity to anesthesia, infection, difficult healing of wounds, edema formation, change in color of the skin, numbness of the skin. Sometimes it happens that a client is not satisfied with the end result or that a client finds his/her face has changed for the worse as a result of the treatment. Facial changes are difficult to reverse. However, in most cases the client is satisfied with the rejuvenation effect of a facelift. The results are only optimal after about a year and a half after the facelift.

How long does a facelift last for the desired effect?

After about five to ten years, the effect of the facelift is (already) a lot less because the aging process of the skin does not stand still. A facelift, as mentioned earlier, often has a significant rejuvenating effect, but is not spectacular for everyone. To avoid disappointments afterwards, you will be well informed in advance about what you can expect.
