Hair loss, Alopecia Areata

You stand in front of the mirror and discover a bald spot. You lose her. For Dutch people, “normal” as you get older, but not if it just happens spontaneously. Your hair is falling out. A horror for everyone. A disease that causes this is called Alopecia Areata.

Alopecia Areata

With Alopecia Areata you have hair loss in certain places. Alopecia Areata is a disease of the hair roots. The hair roots are affected. Where these hair roots are damaged, complete hair loss occurs. Not all hair roots need to be affected. This means that the “sick” hair roots are surrounded by healthy hair roots. In this way, several bald spots are created.

What are the causes of Alopecia Areata

The exact cause of Alopecia Areata is not fully known. The main suspicion is that you can get this because you have a disorder in your defense mechanism. If this is out of balance, it is no longer directed against infections from outside, but against your own body. You are less immune to infections and it affects your body. In this case it affects your hair roots. Facts have shown that people who already suffer from a disease related to the immune system (such as thyroid disorders, anemia) are more likely to develop Alopecia Areata.

What are the symptoms?

Bald spots appear. This does not have to be only on your scalp, but can also be on your eyebrows, eyelashes, armpits, beard or pubic area. The hair on your scalp may even disappear completely. If you have the worst form of Alopecia Areata, all body hair disappears. Fortunately, this almost never occurs. The hair can come back, but you never know for sure whether the hair is permanent.

Therapy

Often with Alopecia Areata, the hair comes back after years. Yet this is too long to wait for most patients. They then follow a treatment that accelerates hair growth.

Stimulus therapy

With this therapy, irritating ointments are applied to your scalp. (Such as Pekelharing lotion) This should accelerate hair growth. Unfortunately, it has not yet been proven whether it is effective.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are hormones that the body produces itself. They influence the immune system. By administering these hormones it is hoped that the abnormal immune system in the bald spots will be suppressed. Patients can administer these hormones themselves by applying ointment or lotion.

Light therapy

People try to accelerate hair growth by using UV rays. It is true that once the hair has grown back and the light can no longer reach the scalp, the hair can fall out just as quickly.
