It all starts in a bottle with a mix of alcohol, water, color and fragrances. You buy it somewhere, drink it, it goes to your esophagus, stomach and small intestine and then ends up in your blood.
Alcohol is transported through the blood throughout the body, ultimately reaching the brain. This numbs the brain.
Anyone who drinks more than 25 glasses of alcohol in a week has a risk of brain damage, which means that the brain will work less well and that things will be less well remembered, less well thought out and less able to adapt in certain situations . . In addition, the brain can also shrink. If the brain damage is not yet that extensive and the person in question is younger than 40 years old, the brain damage can still be repaired, provided that drinking is stopped. If someone drinks too much alcohol for years, this can cause irreversible brain damage. Long-term drinkers also have a great need for vitamin B and the risk of vitamin B deficiency is therefore increased. Vitamin B deficiency can lead to a form of premature dementia also called Korsakoff’s syndrome.

What is responsible alcohol consumption?

An occasional glass of alcohol is not bad at all, but drink in moderation. Below is a small overview of what is responsible regarding the use of alcohol:

  • Men: Maximum 2 glasses of alcohol per day, no alcohol 2 days a week.
  • Women: Maximum 1 glass of alcohol per day, no alcohol 2 days a week.
  • Women: No alcohol during pregnancy.
  • General: No alcohol in combination with driving, studying, work or sports.
  • General: No alcohol in combination with medicines or drugs

What else happens to the body?

In addition to numbing the brain, there are other consequences for the body due to the use of alcohol. Because alcohol contains a lot of calories, it makes you fat. Furthermore, drinks and mixes often contain a lot of sugar. In addition to having a lot of calories, alcohol also slows down the breakdown of food, for example, which makes you get fat faster. Excessive alcohol use is also not good for the heart and blood vessels, many people suffer from high blood pressure, heart problems or even brain hemorrhages due to excessive alcohol use.
In addition to brain numbing, fattening and cardiovascular complaints, there is another organ in your body that has many consequences from excessive alcohol use, namely the liver.
Alcohol is a toxic substance for the body and that means that it is not good. The liver is the organ in your body that ensures that all foreign and toxic substances are broken down in your body, including alcohol. Drinking a standard glass of alcohol takes one to one and a half hours, so you can imagine that your liver has to work hard after a night out. However, your liver will not work faster if you drink several glasses. Long-term excessive alcohol consumption can lead to liver cirrhosis, which is in most cases a fatal disease.
A glass of alcohol is nice, but drink in moderation.
