What is quinoa?
Quinoa is a crop that mainly comes from South America. It grows in countries such as Peru and Bolivia, but is also found in the Rocky Mountains in the United States. Although it looks very similar to a grain, it is not. Yet it is often eaten as a grain, due to its nutty taste. Quinoa is related to spinach. The Incas already used quinoa and saw it as a sacred food and there are different types available. So you have black, red, green and white quinoa. It all tastes the same. Quinoa is not very well known here, but it is extremely healthy and nutritious and has a positive effect on people who want to lose weight.
Lose weight with quinoa
Quinoa has many positive properties. Quinoa falls into the category of complete food. It is also called a superfood. This means that it contains a lot of vitamins and minerals and is therefore a very good addition to a healthy lifestyle. It contains a lot of protein, which gives you a feeling of fullness. This means you will be much less likely to experience cravings for unhealthy snacks. Quinoa will also provide more muscle tissue, allowing you to lose calories faster. Quinoa barely has any calories, but it is quite rich, so you don’t need much at all. Quinoa is seen as a real power food and is unfortunately not yet well known. However, if you want to lose weight, you should regularly add this to your diet. The effect will be visible very quickly.
Where can you buy it?
Because quinoa is not well known in the Netherlands, you cannot simply buy it in the supermarket. It is usually at organic stores or health food stores. There are also many online shops where you can buy it. Quinoa is not expensive. It costs about 3 to 4 euros for a 500 gram bag. That seems very expensive, but quinoa expands a lot after preparation and so you don’t need that much at all. Maximum 50 grams per person, but even with less you can make a delicious meal.

How should you eat quinoa?
First you need to clean the quinoa thoroughly, for example in a colander with some water. Then you need to cook it. For one quantity of quinoa, take two quantities of water and let it boil for about five to ten minutes. You can tell when it’s done when the water has been absorbed and the quinoa is translucent. Then let it soak for ten minutes. You can use it for anything. For example, you can stir-fry it with all kinds of vegetables or put it in an oven dish. It’s also very easy: serve it with some fried vegetables and minced meat with some tomato puree in it. A delicious, nutritious dish that takes hardly any time. Quinoa can also be eaten as a rice substitute. There are also all kinds of recipes with quinoa on the internet, so you can get plenty of different ideas. Once you have cooked quinoa, you can also freeze it to use later. There are also more and more recipes with quinoa.
Ideal for vegetarians
Because quinoa contains so much protein, it is a very good meat substitute. Vegetarians still get the right nutrients. It is therefore possible to eat quinoa without meat, but with some vegetables or fruit.
