Dementia research

Research into dementia is extremely important. Research needs to be done into medicines, but also into dementia itself. Alzheimer Netherlands directs many of these studies. Alzheimer Nederland also supports these studies with money. This article provides an overview of research that is currently underway.

Researchers are always trying to discover new things. For example, they investigate how they can inhibit, prevent or cure dementia. Research is also being conducted into the risk of dementia and the heredity of dementia. The Alzheimer Netherlands Foundation conducts research into all these things with the help of hospitals and Alzheimer’s centers.
Alzh Eimer Nederland is the first to focus mainly on early diagnosis , with this they want to ensure that the diagnosis can be made earlier. For example, they are investigating whether it is possible to predict dementia. If it is clear that someone is developing or has dementia, treatment and care can be better tailored to the patient. The diagnosis also gives the patient peace of mind about what is going on. If someone knows at an early stage that he or she has or will develop dementia, the person can decide for themselves about the type of assistance, financial matters, types of care and death.
Secondly, Alzheimer Nederland focuses on treatments . They try to develop new methods that reduce the symptoms of dementia or limit the physical and emotional consequences of dementia. Research is also being conducted into the effectiveness of an online assistance program for informal caregivers, into people who also have other diseases in addition to dementia, and how you can offer young people with dementia and their informal caregivers appropriate care.
In addition to the above, Alzheimer Nederland conducts many more (smaller) studies. Thanks in part to all these studies, Alzheimer Nederland can inform governments and health insurers about dementia so that their policies can be improved. Alzheimer Nederland works together with Alzheimer centers to properly carry out these studies. The Alzheimer Centers are located in Maastricht, Nijmegen and the VUmc in Amsterdam.
